Amarapura / Myanmar

"The City of Immortals", means the name of the city Amapura, located in the heart of Myanmar, literally translated. The former capital of Upper Burma was founded in 1781 under King Bodawpaya, who then moved his seat of power to this new city, before royal astrologers shifted the seat of government in 1857 to Mandalay, about 11 km northeast. Today the town is famous for its ubiquitous finest silk and cotton weaving factories.

For visiting Amapura you should take approximately 2 to 3 hours. The city is beautifully located on Lake Thaungthaman over which spans with 1,200 m the longest teak wood bridge in the world leads (the "U Bein Bridge"). Drink on the edge of the lake a cup of Chinese tea before you cross the bridge and visit the Kyauktawgyi Pagoda on the other bank. This was built in 1847 after the model of the Ananda Temple in Bagan. It houses a beautiful Buddha statue and one of the best-preserved-murals (at the four entrance doors). Then enjoy the wonderful evening atmosphere (or optionally by a boat on the lake). In Amapura is also the temple Mahagandayon. It was built in the fifties of the 20th century and with approximately 700 monks is the largest Buddhist monastery in Myanmar.
