Amsterdam / Netherlands

The city of Amsterdam is located in the province of North Holland, at the mouth of the Amstel and the IJ into the IJsselmeer and is connected through the North Sea Canal to the North Sea. Amsterdam with 692,000 inhabitants is the capital of the Netherlands, but not the seat of government or the royal family, that is in the Hague. Amsterdam is built around a network of canals and has about 40 museums.

The most important museums are:
The Rijksmuseum: this National museum houses Dutch paintings from the 16th-19th century, including the famous Nightwatch by Rembrandt
The Anne Frank House: Annelies Marie Frank was a Jewish, German girl hiding with her family during the Second World War in Amsterdam, but shortly before the end of war fell victim to the Nazi genocide. She recorded her hideaway life in a diary.
The Vincent van Gogh Museum: Paul Vincent van Gogh was one of the main founders of Impressionism.
The Museum Het Rembrandthuis is housed in the former home of the painter. Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn is considered the most important Dutch painter of the 17th century. Apart from painting Rembrandt also dealt with etching and drawing. His works are part of a period that historians call the Dutch Golden Age, a period in which Dutch culture, science, trade and political influence reached their zenith
