Antofagasta / Chile

The city of Antofagasta is located in northern Chile and has arunf 350,000 inhabitants. The city is therefore located by the Pacific, but is surrounded by desert and thus climatically quite dry. In the 19th century great nitric and nitrate deposits were discovered in the area around Antofagasta, and because shortly afterwards the Spanish-Bolivian port of Cobija north of Antofagasta was destroyed Antofagasta took quite a boom and became the most important port in the region.

The city itself is extremely popular for the two beaches. Through the Humboldt Current, the water in this area is however rather cool and not suitable for swimming  as in many other Chilean cities. Worth seeing is the small rock in the sea off Antofagasta, which has the shape of a gate and is therefore called "Portada".
Also ride outdoors, for example, to the Atacama Desert. From the earlier heyday of the nitrate mines there are extinct villages and mines, including a copper mine, the Chuquicamata. In addition, there is a large salt lake (Salar de Atacama) in the surroundings where you can see flamingos and geysers and on a plateau (El Tatio)
