Assuan / Egypt

Aswan lies on the banks of the Nile and has 230,000 inhabitants. The city is supposed to be the ancient Syene. Today, however, it is mainly known for its gigantic dam that is one of the greatest attractions of the city.

The Aswan Dam is 2 km long, the new high dam even more than 3km. The two dams stow together the Lake Nasser. To enable the gigantic construction, several temples and villages that lay in the flooding area had to be relocated. To this end, they had been completely dismantled and faithfully rebuilt higher up. Around Aswan however the magnificent ancient sites have been preserved. Among them is the mausoleum of the Aga Khan as well as other temples and tombs.
The red quarries are also a remarkable phenomenon.
Also on the left side of Nile there are interesting archaeological sites including the ancient tombs of Syene and Philae with famous temple ruins.
In Aswan informs the Nubian Museum accurately about the long history of the area. There are also interesting exhibits, including a statue of Ramses II.
