Callao (Lima) / Peru

Callao is the capital and major naval and trading port of the same-named province in the metropolitan area Lima-Callao by the Bay of Callao founded in 1537 by Spaniards. The harbor is sheltered by the island of San Lorenzo. In the 16th century Callao was the starting point of many Spanish expeditions in the Pacific, however, was also repeatedly attacked by various privateers - the most famous among them was Francis Drake. Today the city has about 800,000 inhabitants.

Callao is a good starting point for trips to the sites of the Inca, Nazca or Moche culture. Also the famous Gold Museum is worth a visit. Over the harbor towers the Fortress Real Felipe. Off the coast lie several islands, home to many sea lions and songbirds in an intact ecosystem.
