Castries, St. Lucia / Caribbean
Castries is the capital and port city of the Antilles island of St. Lucia. With approximately 65,000 inhabitants, it is the largest city of the island and an ideal starting point for inland excursions. In Castries, there are hardly any historical buildings and sights as the beautiful colorful wooden houses were completely destroyed in the past decades by fire.
Interesting are the "Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception" at Columbus Square and the "Government House". A city stroll is worth especially on Saturday morning, when at the deep-sea port "The Carenage" the market stalls are set up. In the shopping center "Point Seraphine" you can buy duty free. Famous is the "Marigot Bay" with its beautiful sandy beaches and the crystal clear Caribbean Sea. Nature lovers are attracted by the waterfall of "Anse-La-Raye" and a ride to the highest mountain of the island, the Mount Gimie. In the waters around St. Lucia numerous whales and dolphins frolic - the speedboats have the aequate equipment on board to perceive the whale sounds.
