Dakar, the capital of Senegal,is located on the Cape Verde Peninsula, on the Atlantic coast of the country. The position on the western edge of Africa (it is the westernmost African city) makes Dakar an advantageous starting point for transatlantic and European trade, which favored the growth of the major regional port city.
The Dakarer port is one of the most modern and busiest in Africa. The majority of Senegalese industry is concentrated in the Dakarer region.
Dakar is a diverse metropolis of French lifestyle and African culture, it has a vibrant and colorful downtown. From the Place de l'Independance you reach the Avenue George Pompidou, the main shopping street in Dakar. After 2oo m you reach the Marché de Sandaga. There you can buy African fabrics and shoes. Also many imitations of known branded products are offered, which are not necessarily of equivalent quality.
The city is known due to the motorsport as the destination of the Dakar Rally, formerly Paris-Dakar Rally. So the final stage of the rally takes place around the Lac Rose, a red salt lake in the north of the Dakar Peninsula.
Furthermore, in addition to the central stadium in the Pule district the Millenium Monument close to the Grand Mosque is worth mentioning. Also the historical center in the vicinity of Place de la Independance and the overseas port, wherefrom the 15-minute crossing to the former slave island of Goree is possible.

On the peninsula of Cap-Vert lies the symbolic landmarks. Two extinct volcano hills form the "Mamelles du Senegal", the bosom of Senegal. A romantic mood conveys a lighthouse on one of the hills.
