Den Helder / Netherlands

Den Helder with its 57,000 inhabitants, is located in the Dutch province of North Holland, on the North Sea coast. For centuries, the port of Den Helder played a strategically important role, because  here the ships of the Dutch East India Company once got provision supplies. The town's name translates as much as to the Hell gate 'and alludes to the former extremely massive and fortified fortifications of Den Helder.

Den Helder is one of the Dutch municipalities with the most sunshine hours per year. Take advantage of this bonus point while visiting the kilometer-long beach in the city or on long walks through the surrounding forests and tidal flats. Den Helder also houses some very interesting museums, including the Käthe Kruse Toy and Doll Museum, the Maritime Museum and the museum inside the Fort Kijkduin. Also, in no case miss the modern North Sea Aquarium of the city with its various pools and its exhibition about whale hunting.
