Greifswald lies on the European Route of the Brick Gothic and possesses a very famous building in the monastery ruin Eldena. It is also renowned for the works of Caspar David Friedrich, the great painter of the German Romanticism. A futher popular emblem of Greifswald is the historic drawbridge in Wieck. The wooden bridge built in 1887 after a Dutch model connects the towns Wieck and Eldena. The drawbridge is still being used today. The historic centre is also worth a visit, it offers numerous historic buildings, for instance several churches, a soap work, the university and the so-called "Fangenturm"(an old tower). The Caspar David Friedrich Centre has its residence in the soap work. A particularity of Greifswald is that it offers a tour guide also for persons with physical handicaps.
