Hilo, Big Island (Hawaii) / USA West Coast

Hilo is with more than 40,000 inhabitants, the largest city in Hawaii and also the capital of Hawaii County. The city lies on Hilo Bay, a bay in the northeast of the island. Not far from Hilo rise the two volcanoes Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea each more than 4,000 m high. On the latter is the Mauna Kea Observatorium operating the largest telescopes in the world. Hilo is one of the rainiest cities in the world: each year here fall around here around 3,280 mm of rainfall. Economically, the city lives mainly from fishing and tourism.

To visitors Hilo offers a little piece of paradise: snow-capped volcanoes, the lava landscapes of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, large macadamia nut plantations, forests full of orchids, black sand beaches. Adventurous guests have the opportunity to walk along the edge of the Kilauea Crater along Hawaii's smallest volcano.
The buildings of the well preserved old town partly date back to the early 20th century. A walk in the historic downtown is worthwhile!
