Key West, Florida / USA East Coast

Key West is a town of about 25,000 inhabitants on the same-named island in Monroe County, Florida (USA) .The island belongs to the Florida Keys. Through the completion of the railway connection by Henry M. Flagler leading over numerous bridges to the mainland Key West became  an important port for the only 145 km away for Cuba. Since Key West was thus accessible by road the southernmost point in Key West has since been considered the southernmost point of the mainland United States. In 1938 the highway Nr. 1 that leads to Key West became a replacement for the railway bridge destroyed by a hurricane.

Ernest Hemingway lived as of 1928 on for several years in Key West. His former house is now a Hemingway Museum (938 Street Whitehead). Likewise worth seeing is the Harry S. Truman Little White House. It was built in 1890 as a home for the first officers of the US Navy.
The house was and is home to many distinguished guests. Thomas Edison lived here during World War I, while doing deep research for the US Navy. The abundant subtropical vegetation is reflected on the whole island. In the Key West Aquarium, which was founded in 1934 you can enjoy the wildlife of a coral reef up close. Barracudas, crabs, clams, turtles and all that to touch as well. The aquarium was renovated in 1983 and therefore meets the high requirements of species protection. Unforgettable will be for every visitor the sunset in Key West. When the last piece of the red disc sinks into the sea the locals and tourists who gathered for this daily spectacle start applauding.
