Maiao, Society Islands / Polynesia
Maiao is one of the Society Islands belonging to French Polynesia. About 300 people live on this small island, which is also known under the names "Ile interdite" (prohibited island ') and "Ile oubliée" (Forgotten Island).
Maiao has always been known for its export of Pandanus, also called "Screw pine". The roofs of the typical Tahitian houses,among other things, are made from the material of these trees. A special feature of the Society Islands,is its breathtaking scenery smell. The Tahitian tiare, which blooms only on these islands is one of the most intense odor flowers worldwide. In the coral reefs around the islands cavort colorful clowns and butterfly fish.
