Murmansk / Russia

Murmansk, (the name stands for north men or Norwegians), largest city on earth, north of the Arctic Circle (about 380,000 inhabitants). It is located on the Kola Peninsula in the Barents Sea and is an important year-long ice-free port. Near Murmansk is the main Russian naval base. That is why there are also extensive shipyards. The fishing and the fish processing industry are also important. The city is the seat of research institutes for oceanography and polar research. The city was founded only during World War I in 1915, during World War II it was an important supply port of the Allies.

In Murmansk is the northernmost monastery of Russia: Triphonov-Pečengsky. Remarkable are the numerous museums such as the Museum of the North Sea Fleet about the history and development of the north, the Museum of the Kola Seamen, the Pomoren Museum. The city has several theatres, a Philharmonic, numerous libraries, colleges and universities.
