Nouméa / New Caledonia

Nouméa is the capital of the French Transcaucasian New Caledonia, an island group between New Zealand and Solomon Islands. The town was founded in 1854 under the name Port-de-France at the south-western end of the main island of New Caledonia and today has about 90,000 inhabitants. In addition to tourism, its main source of income is nickel processing.

A steel lighthouse destined for the town of Fort-de-France in Martinique was inadvertently delivered to Nouméa because of its similarity. This lighthouse is still in operation on the island of Amédée, barely 20 km from the coast of Noumea, and is a popular trip destination for tourists. Despite its modernity, the city of Nouméa has maintained numerous testimonies from its past, such as beautiful colonial buildings.
