Pakokku / Myanmar
The city of Pakokku is located in Myanmar on the Irawadi River, a few kilometers from the historical city of Pagan. Pakokku offers only temples and pagodas but also a very modern city with good shopping options and it is not overly crowded by tourists. The port is not only used for passenger navigation but also for trade with the cultivation products of the area, including tobacco, rice and teak.
Remarkable are however the historical buildings in the Pakhangyi excavation site including the Ti-ho-shin temple from the 12th century, the Shwe-tan-tit Pagoda with newer mural paintings, as well as two monasteries. But also the fertile environment especially with the tabaks fields is attractive. In the city itself, the markets are an experience where everywhere it smells of tobacco and where the beautiful colorful cotton ceilings and all sorts of things can be purchased.
