Panama Canal / Panama
The passage of the Panama Canal is one of the most beautiful experiences of a cruise. The canal was artificially created in the 19th century to significantly reduce the journey from the Caribbean to the Pacific. It runs from Colón in the Caribbean to Panama City on the Pacific Ocean, meanwhile overcoming differences at an altitude of 26 meters on three main locks.
There are, from north to south, the first three locks at Gatun, then the Pedro Miguel lock and then finally the Miraflores locks. Along the canal birds can be well watched, especially in the area of Gatun Lake, which was also created artificially. At the Gaillard Cut you will have a stunning view over the area that is drawn here by the strong geological movements and which is the narrowest part of the channel. At Miraflores locks you should not miss to watch from asore the millimeter-precise work of the locks. There is a small visitor center here.
