Rousse / Bulgaria

The city of Rousse (also: Russe, Ruse, Bulgarian: Pyce) is located on the southern bank of the Danube in Bulgaria, directly on the border with Romania. The Romanian city, to which Rousse is connected by a bridge, is called Giurgiu. Rousse has the largest Danube port in Bulgaria.
Already in 70 AD. a Roman fortress was built here, which eventually evolved into the present city through detours. The cityscape is characterized by many Baroque and Renaissance buildings.

The center of the city is Ploshtad Svoboda (Freedom Square). There is a lot of Hapsburg architecture and a concrete monster as a town hall, as well as a lot of greenery and the Freedom Monument. During a construction campaign in the 19th century, many houses were decorated with small balconies and decorated facades. Along the main shopping street leading from the square, this architecture is particularly distinctive.
Worth seeing is also the Pantheon, which is visible from afar, as well as several museums (the Historical Museum, the Art Museum, the Natural Science Museum).
Freedom Square is not far from the Danube. Here attracts a walk along the waterfront.
In the vicinity of Rousse is the longest steel bridge in Europe. It consists of two "floors" and is called the Bridge of Friendship.
