Salaverry (Trujillo) / Peru
Salaverry located at the foot of the Andes, has retained the charm of a colonial city with ancient churches, colonial houses with flower-adorned balconies and backyards. In front of the cathedral at the Plaza de Armas, a sculpture recalls the liberation of Peru. Many manor houses can be visited, including the House of Emancipation, where Peru's independence from Spain was declared.
From Salaverry you can visit the legendary ancient Inca sites of Cuzco and Machu Picchu. Numerous ruins of the fascinating Inca culture can be visited, including the Coriancha, the Second Temple of the Sun. Churches like La Merced and the convent San Francisco Belen de los Reves from the 17th century as well as the monasteries of Santa Clara and San Blas represent an impressive mix of Spanish and Indian architecture.
