Santa Marta / Colombia
Santa Marta is located on the Caribbean coast of Colombia, and is not only an important port with cargo and coal, but also tourist center with numerous hotels and restaurants. Santa Marta has around 200,000 inhabitants. The city was founded in 1525 and is thus the oldest city in Colombia.
Santa Marta, located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, is an ideal hiking and swim paradise. The snow-capped peaks of the Pico Colon and Pico lie up to 5775 meters above sea level and are located just 45 kilometers from the tropical beaches of the National Park Tayrona. The archeological excavation site Pueblito and Ciudad Perdida are worth seeing. The Sierra Nevada is home to two tribes, the Kogi and Arhuacos. In Santa Marta also ended the life of one of the most famous South Americans: Simon Bolivar, whose dream of a united Spanish-speaking nation never came true.
