Sao Felipe, Fogo / Cape Verde
Fogo is the fourth largest island of Cape Verde; it consists of a magnificent volcanic landscape, here grow maize and beans grow, baobab trees, there are small houses in the deeply cut valleys with agaves and palm trees. Parasitic cones and ash mountains make the landscape so varied. On this "island under the wind" lies the capital Sao Felipe on the west coast with about 10,000 inhabitants, high above the sea on cliffs. A stairway from the sea to the city with its rocking fishing boats.
Sao Felipe has a historic city center, which is extremely worth seeing. The old Sobrados (town houses) are very well preserved and have been renovated, an excellent example of the colonial architecture in pastel colors.
Sao Felipe is divided into the rich district of Sao Felipe Baixo and the poor district of Sao Felipe Riba. There are markets, bars and a lot of possibilities to stroll and explore on your own the town or to make yourself cosy under the town at the beach.
