Split / Croatia

Split (also Italian: Spalato) is the largest city of Croatia with 200,000 inhabitants and is located in the south of the country on the Adriatic coast. The city is therefore also a major port city, but also worth seeing for its cultural monuments as already in the year 300 AD. the famous Diocletian Palace developed around the city.

A large part of Diocletian Palace can be seen today. It is located on the small peninsula of Split, around it lies the beautiful old town. There are plenty of shops and bars here. Worth visiting is the Cathedral of Sveti Duje (holy Duje), from whose tower you can enjoy a great view over the roofs of the old town. Another highlight is the "Podrumi", an underground network of corridors under the Diocletian Palace and the Peristil, an ancient colonnade.
Then you can stroll along the harbor promenade, the so-called Riva, because this promenade is also well known far beyond Split. For art enthusiasts, the Meštrović Gallery offers important works by the painter, historians will get their money's worth in the Historical Museum or in "Salona", a Roman settlement in the north of the city. And then you can visit the beautiful beach and relax from sightseeing.
