Yittigran, Siberia / Russia
The Russian island of Yttigran is located in the Bering Sea, near the coast of the Chukchi peninsula. It is separated from the mainland by a sound, which is only 1.5 km wide at its narrowest point. Nowadays, Yttigran is a very popular travel destination for ecotourists.
The largest and most famous attraction of the island is the so-called "Avenue of the Whale Bones" on the north coast. This masterpiece of historical Arctic culture consists of the artfully arranged bones and skulls of whales, as well as different stones. It is assumed that this arrangement was once used as a kind of central shrine by the various settlements on the Chukotka Coast.
