Angra do Heroísmo, which means as much as "bay of heroism", is a Portuguese city on the island of Terceira which is part of the Azores. Its nickname, do Heroísmo the city was awarded by Queen Maria II. Because it remained steadfast on the part of traditionalists during the Miguelist War.
The city is the oldest of the Azores, it got city rights in 1534. At the same time it became Episcopal center through Pope Paul III. Since 1976, Angra is a university town. The city is also regarded as one of the finest examples in Portugal of urban Renaissance.

The archipelago of the Azores (Ilhas dos Açores, in English : Habicht Islands) are a group of nine major and several smaller Portuguese Atlantic islands, which lie about 1,500 kilometers west of mainland Europe and another 3,600 km to the east of North America. Administratively the Azores form an autonomous region of Portugal. Coin finds suggest that the Azores have already been visited in ancient times by the Phoenicians. In 1427 they were visited by Diogo de Silves on behalf of Henry the Navigator and taken in possession by Portugal. Already in the middle of the 15th century began the colonization of the islands. Quickly they became an important base on the way to the possessions in Central and South America. With the beginning of the 19th century the Azores experienced an economic boom, among other things, through the export of oranges, tea and tobacco. About 250,000 people live on the islands, the majority of which are Portuguese citizens.
In Cais do Pico - named after the Long Wharf - is the most important harbor of the island next to Madalena: a major container terminal and fishing harbor. Already the massive quay wall makes you guess its the meaning. But also the old quay opposite the old whale factory is still preserved. Here dock the local fishermen.
The small island of Corvo ("Raven") consists of the now extinct volcano Monte Gordo and is part of the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. The island was discovered in 1452, along with Flores as the last of the Azores Islands. Corvos only settlement, Vila Nova de Corvo, now houses about 400 inhabitants making it one of the smallest cities across Europe.
The small community of Fajã Grande is located in the far west of the Azores island Flores and is therefore considered the westernmost city throughout Europe. Life is idyllic in this small 200-inhabitant village, which is located directly at the foot of an imposing cliff. Until 1970, more people still lived here without electricity!
Flores is an island of the Azores, located in the Atlantic Ocean. Around 4,400 people live in the most westernized of all European Islands, 1,600 of them in the capital Santa Cruz das Flores. The island got its name due to its impressive flower landscapes.
Among the objects of interest in and around Funchal is the flower, vegetable and fish market, Monte, where the tomb of the last Austrian Emperor Charles of Habsburg lies. The trip by basket sleigh from Monte to Livramento is just as recommendable as a visit to the botanic gardens.
The Portuguese city of Horta is located on the southeast shore of the island of Faial belonging to the Azores. The city has about 6,500 inhabitants and is the administrative center of the same-named Horta county. The colonization of Faial began already around 1460. In the 18th century Horta was important as a port. The old port of the city was in the bay of Porto Pim, protected by the two mountains Monte Queimado and Monte da Guia. In 1876 began the construction of today's harbor where now also larger steamships can dock. Today Horta is the third largest fishing port of the Azores.
Terceira, with around 56,000 inhabitants is part of the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. The capital Angra do Heroísmo lies, like all settlements Terceira, by the coast. The interior of the island is very rough and not very suitable for settlement.
