The island is named after Philip Gidley King (1758 - 1808) the former Governor of New South Wales to which the area of Tasmania belonged at that time. About 1,600 people live on King Island. Largest city on the island is Curry. The former mining town Grassy, in the east of the island, is known today for its penguin colonies at the harbor.
The city of Launceston is located in the northeast of the island of Tasmania belonging to Australia at the entrance to the Tamar Valley. It has around 99,400 inhabitants and is the second largest city after Hobart the second largest town of the island.
The Macquarie Island is an island in the Pacific Ocean in the Australian state of Tasmania. It was named after Lachlan Macquarie, who was from 1810 to 1821 governor of the federal state of New South Wales and who is also considered one of the founders of Australia. Due to its geological significance, the island which is almost the only place in the world where the oceanic crust was lifted above the water level is since 1997 part of the world nature heritage.
