Arrecife, Lanzarote (Canary Islands) / Spain
Arrecife is the most important port of Lanzarote. The black sandy beaches from igneous rocks are the landmark of Lanzarote. There is a strong wind which attracts surfers in Arrecife.
The island´s capital Arrecife ("arrecifes" is the name of a black volcanic reef) offers quite some for culturally interested people. The Castillo de san Gabriel is an archaeological and ethnographic museum, the Castillo de San Jose accomodates an international museum of contemporary art and the Casa Agustin de La Hoz, an old, Art Noveau inspired, community centre from the 19th century is worth seeing. The Casa de Los Arroyo is a palace with a courtyard, framed by wood carved galleries. The shores of the Charco de San invite for strolling. In the evening, the fishermen houses are brightly enlightened. Pure romance. The white bell tower of the Iglesia de San Gines is worth seeing.
