Kralendijk, Bonaire / Caribbean

Kralendijk is the capital of the island of Bonaire, which belongs alongside Aruba and Curacao to the ABC islands of the former Netherlands Antilles.
Bonaire is the second largest of the ABC islands. The total area is 288 square kilometers, the population about 15,000. It was first settled by the "Caiquetos" a tribe of the Arawak, they gave the island its name "Bonay" which means "deep country". The first Europeans arrived in 1499 under Alonso de Ojeda and Amerigo Vespucci on the island and took them for Spain in possession. In 1633 the Dutch conquered it for the first time, over the years the tenure changed several times, ultimately with the Treaty of Paris in 1816, it was finally attributed to the Netherlands. On October 10, 2010 the union of the Netherlands Antilles was dissolved.

The Bonaire Marine Park was built in 1971 with the purpose of protecting the underwater world. In 1997 the government officially declared it a naturally protected environment. The intact reefs and the clear water draw each year many tourists who enjoy diving and snorkelling. In order to protect this paradise strict rules were introduced for the protection of the underwater world. The northern coast of the island is a nature park. In the south there are especially cacti deserts, wild donkeys and iguanas. Flamingos can be seen in the marshes.
