Maagdenburg / Duitsland
Magdeburg is the capital of Saxony-Anhalt and after Halle / Saale the second largest city of this province. (approx. 230,000 inhabitants) The town lies on the Elbe and on the outskirts of Magdeburg on old cultural soil. In 2005 it celebrated its 1200th anniversary. Magdeburg was first mentioned as Magadoburg in 805 and was the imperial palace of Emperor Otto I. During the Thirty Years War Magdeburg was conquered by imperial troops under the commander of the Catholic League Tilly in May 1631 and then went up in flames ( "Sack of Magdeburg").As of 1943 Magdeburg was attacked by Allied bombers. First targets were the industries that belonged to the arms production. The old town was destroyed by the air raid on January 16,1945, about 90 percent. Among other things, 15 churches were destroyed and also the foundation diquarter incurred- as in Berlin, Chemnitz and Dresden - immense damage.But Magdeburg has again spruced up especially after 1989 turning point and numerous sacred and renovated secular buildings.
