Mindelo, Sao Vicente / Cape Verde
Mindelo on the island of Sao Vicente is the second largest city of the Cape Verde Islands with about 47,000 inhabitants. The Cape Verde Islands are about 600 kilometers off the western tip of the African continent, the Cape Verde in Senegal. To the island state belong ten larger islands and five smaller islands, which are almost the shape of a semi-circle open to the west. The island group Barlavento ( "over the wind") comprises the northern islands (Santo Antão, São Vicente, Santa Luzia, São Nicolau, Sal and Boa Vista as well as three smaller islands), Sotavento ( "under the wind") the southern (São Tiago, Brava, Fogo and Maio as well as two smaller ones).
The most imposing building of Mindelo is the pink Governor's Palace.
Everywhere there are still houses from the colonial period, of which the plastering scrolls vigorously. Life takes place in the market hall and at the port. The goods in plastic bowls are surely balanced by women on the head and brought to their destination. Faces in an unlikely variety of black - brown bronze- occa-milk chocolate-hazelnut-colored skin tones. The hair is braided, entrapped or tied with curlers.
Also worth a visit is the Cape Verde Museum of Handicraft.
