Papeete (Tahiti), Society Islands / Polynesia
Papeete is located on Tahiti and is the capital of French Polynesia. The port is important for trade and transportation. The city itself is not very large, but the metropolitan area that surrounds the city has over 120,000 visitors. The old town is not much preserved today, because it was destroyed in the 19th century by a fire and later by a storm.
Interesting in the city is primarily the colorful and lively market which conveys the everyday life of the Tahitians and in terms of food everything your heart desires. Also interesting is the arts and crafts, mainly from wood that is produced here and certainly is a nice souvenir. Otherwise, the city is very modern, especially near the harbor. There are two newly designed places wherefrom you can turn your attention to the impressive ships in port and at sea. Then there is a small natural park, the Parc Bougainville, where you will discover all sorts of plants and can have some peace. Certainly a welcome change from the cityscape entirely untypical for Tahiti.
