South -Orkney-slands / Antarctic
The Southern Orkney Islands are an island group in the South Polar Sea, which is not subject to any state sovereignty under the Antarctic Treaty but is claimed by both Great Britain and Argentina. The islands were first discovered in 1821 by whalers George Powell and Nathaniel Palmer.
The land surface of the islands is completely covered by the Antarctic desert which in the few ice-free places lets thrive a number of mosses and lichens thrive. Some species of animals have found an ideal habitat despite the harsh conditions on the Southern Orkney Islands, including some bird and penguin species, as well as weddell seals, leopard seal, Ross seal and crabs.
