Montreal is the second largest city in Canada and the largest city in the province of Quebec with 1.8 million inhabitants. Montreal is located in the east of Canada on the St. Lawrence River. The city lies 1600 kmaway from the Atlantic and with the Port de Montréal is an important port for all ships en route to the Great Lakes. Montreal was, before it was converted into a commercial branch by the French at the beginning of the 17th century, a Wyandot village with the name Hochelaga. The French built Montreal as a starting point for the fur trade with the Indians. The name Montreal came from the history when the first immigrants were led to the mountain on the edge of the settlement. The view was so overwhelming that they called the hill Mont Royal ( 'royal mountain'). Thus the city was named Montreal.
Québec City (French: Ville de Québec) is located on the Saint Lawrence River in the south of Québec and has about 500,000 inhabitants. The old town was declared a UNESCO world cultural heritage.
Toronto is the largest city in Canada and capital of the province of Ontario. To the south, the Toronto metropolitan area with its 5.2 million inhabitants is bordered by the 19,011 km² Lake Ontario. The indigenous people called the place Tarantua, which means meeting place. They held their meetings here. In the 17th century, fur hunters used the meeting place for their business and the British governor Simcoe built a fort at the commercial transshipment center. The settlement, which was still known as York, developed only slowly. The rise of the city began only in the 1850s, when York was connected by rail to the markets in the USA.
