The most famous landmark is the castle which is actually only a ruin, since its destruction only partly reconstructed. The castle looms over the valley from a height of 800 m on the north slope of the Königstuhl and dominates the entire cityscape. The castle houses the Large Barrel. The old bridge over the Neckar (the first record dates back to 1248) is in fact called Carl Theodor Bridge. The castle was blown up by the national socialists at the end of World War II as a strategy to hold back the allied troops but only to be fully reconstructed in 1947. Near the castle right in the city centre is the Heiligkeitskirche (the Church of the Holy Spirit), the most famous church in the city. The oldest church in the city, thought to be about 900 years old, is the St. Peter's church. 'Zum Ritter' ('To the Knight's') is one of the most popular tourist attractions and also the oldest preserved church in Heidelberg opposite from the Church of the Holy Spirit. It was erected in 1592 by a cloth trader family.A beautiful view over the old one has from the Philosophers' Road. This leads up to the Holy Mountain, on the other side of the Neckar, opposite the castle. Following him, you finally reach the Philosophers' Garden, where already Joseph von Eichendorff had enjoyed the views of Heidelberg.
