AIDA Cruises has shaped the cruise market with its ships like no other company. The era of AIDA cruise ships, which has continued to be successful to this day, began in 1996, when the former AIDAcara was put into service under the name "AIDA - The Club Ship". Aida - that is the name of a Nubian princess in ancient Egypt and that of a famous opera by Giuseppe Verdi. Since the latter is often associated with the opening of the Suez Canal, there is a connection to shipping here - even if only one based on a legend. "AIDA - The Club Ship" was christened by Christiane Herzog, wife of former German President Roman Herzog. The almost 200-meter-long ship was intended to transfer the principle of a club holiday to cruises for the German-speaking market - following the example of the American Fun Ships of Carnival Cruise Lines. An extremely successful approach, because the AIDA concept has always appealed primarily to young holidaymakers and families who could not previously imagine going on a cruise. In September 1999, an order for two more ships was placed with the Aker MTW shipyard in Wismar; in 2002 and 2003, the AIDAvita and AIDAaura were put into service. Between 2007 and 2013, AIDA Cruises was expanded to include the seven ships of the Sphinx class, all of which were built at the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg. The ships, each around 250 meters long and designed for 2,500 to 2,700 passengers - AIDAdiva, AIDAbella, AIDAluna, AIDAblu, AIDAsol, AIDAmar and AIDAstella - consolidated AIDA Cruises' position as the German market leader.

"With more space, more variety and more individuality," said AIDA President Michael Ungerer before the new fleet members were put into operation. The next generation of AIDA cruise ships should absolutely impress guests. The AIDAprima (built in 2015) and AIDAperla (built in 2016) each offer 3,300 passengers even more space with the most modern standards on a ship area of 300 meters long and 37.60 meters wide. The cruise line also paid attention to the greatest possible environmental protection when building the two representatives of the Hyperion class. The vertical stem has a positive effect, especially at slow speeds, as frictional resistance is significantly reduced. Thanks to the advanced pod drives and the Mitsubishi Air Lubrication System (MALS), which blows tiny air bubbles under the bottom of the ship, fuel consumption is also significantly reduced. And as far as exhaust gases are concerned: the engineers gave the ships a new filter system that reduces nitrogen and sulfur oxides as well as soot particles by over 90 percent.

In mid-June 2015, AIDA announced that it would return to the Meyer Werft in Papenburg after building the two Hyperion-class ships. There, under the motto "Green Cruising", a new generation of ships was built, the Helios class, which for the first time will be operated 100 percent with liquefied natural gas (LNG). The company wants to completely avoid environmental pollution in the form of emitted soot particles and sulfur oxides. The delivery of another Helios-class cruise ship is planned for 2023. The first representative of the then new and particularly environmentally friendly Helios class is the AIDAnova. Under the Italian flag, the mega cruise ship has been delighting around 6,600 passengers since August 2018, who are accommodated in the 2,500 cabins when all additional beds are occupied. With more than 180,000 gross tonnage, the new ship was one of the largest ships and is therefore significantly larger than the AIDAprima and its identical sister AIDAperla. At the beginning of 2022, the AIDAcosma began cruise operations as the current flagship. It surpassed its sister AIDAnova with 5,464 passengers, 2,732 cabins and 183,900 gross tonnage.

Living: cabins and suites The cabins and suites of the AIDA fleet are primarily intended for the German market. The most popular categories are probably the larger versions of the inside, sea view and balcony cabins. The wardrobe, which has both storage compartments and coat hangers, also contains the life jackets and additional wool blankets. Next to the wardrobe there is usually a desk or dressing table and an armchair. In the drawer of the desk there is a permanently mounted hairdryer with extremely high performance and on the desk there is the comfortable cabin telephone. Above the desk there is also an interactive flat screen TV and an illuminated mirror as well as two 230V sockets for German Schuko plugs and a network socket. As is now common everywhere for reasons of energy efficiency, the power supply to the cabin only works if you put your boarding card in a holder next to the entrance.
Opposite the desk and wardrobe there is usually the bathroom with a sink, large mirror, toilet and a shower with a glass partition. Here too, the functionally elegant furnishings are evident, for example in the form of the high-quality Grohe fittings. A small but important detail: there are enough hooks for hanging up clothes, towels, washing utensils and the like - by no means a given. In the living room there are 90 centimetre wide, comfortable beds. The Bonnell spring core of the mattresses has extra stabilisation and spring calming in the middle zone thanks to inserted foam strips. There is enough space under the beds to store even larger suitcases invisibly.
In addition to the beds, there are two small, open bedside tables and small reading lamps. A larger shelf is on the wall facing the bathroom. There is also an armchair between the beds and the outside wall or the balcony, which folds out to become a third bed. A small side table completes the ensemble. Thanks to its removable table top, it can be converted into a stool if required. If it is a balcony cabin, a large and - as is usual on ships - stiff and self-closing sliding door leads outside. In addition to the two chairs with high backs and the small side table, there is a special feature that can be stretched across the balcony for that real pirate feeling.
Hyperion class: more space, more sophistication
The cabin concept of the AIDAprima and AIDAperla, the sister ships of the Hyperion class, focuses on even more space and sophistication. The majority of the cabins have their own veranda; some have walk-in closets and two bathrooms. The selection of cabin categories has been expanded in the Hyperion class, so that every guest can find the cabin or suite of their choice.
