The long-drawn"tail" of the island, which forms more than two-thirds of the surface, consists of soft hilly landscape. Lavender, oleander, fig trees and cypresses give this scenery an almost Tuscan flair. The "head" of this island shows a complete different picture: the mountains, which are more than 600 metres high, only make agriculture possible in a few places. The tourism is concentrated in the four coastal villages Jelsa, Vrboska, Sarti Grad and Hvar. Try the culinary speciality of Vbroska: fish marinade with laurel and rosemary, which give the typical pickled anchovies its true flavour. With its wonderful coves, clean sandy beaches and clear water the island defenitely is one of the most beautiful holiday destination of Europe.
