Male, Nord Male Atoll / Maldives

Malé is the capital of the Maldives. The approximately 75,000 inhabitants live densely on the island of Malé, which has an area of only about 1.8 square kilometers. In addition to the houses, which cannot be built higher than the tower of the main mosque (Friday Mosque), there is a thriving, economic activity of a lively tropical town: markets, busy traffic and a hopelessly crowded harbor full of fishing boats, next to the yachts of the well-heeled, the merchant ships as well as water taxis.

As one of the most important monuments of Malé, the Presidential Palace Theemuge is a must on any city visit. It architecture bindes very ingenously local tradition with modern art. It lies in Orchid Magu in the vest part of the main shopping street Well worth seeing is also the sultan palace Muleeaage which was build before World War I by the the sultan Shamsuddeen III. for his son and which is today a national museum with relics from the pre-Islamic time and royal antiquities. One of the lively places in Malé is the fish market. This is where the hustle and bustle begins for real in the afternoon. Just then when the local fishing boats dock here and offer the catch up for sale. Since the inhabitants stock up here daily with fresh fish, the fish market belongs to the everyday life of any Maldivian.
Out of the three most magnificent mosques in the Maldives two are in Malé. The Hukuru Miskiiy was built by the charismatic and popular Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar I in the middle of the 17th century. Today however, the great Friday Mosque with its golden dome dominates the cityscape of Malé. The Aasaari Miskiiy Mosque in northern Nilandhooatoll dates back to the reign of the First Sultan, who had converted the islanders to Islam in the 12th century. Today, Islam is state religion.
