Martha's Vineyard is an island in Dukes County, southeast of Massachusetts (USA) separated from the Cape Cod by the Vineyard Sund. It stretches from west to east over a length of 27 kilometers, from north to south it is 16 kilometers long. Edgartown, the most important city on the island, was once an important center of whale catching. The population of the island is about 12,000. Martha's Vineyard was first settled by Europeans in 1642.
