Meißen is a district town with about 33,000 inhabitants in the state of Saxony, on the Elbe. In the state porcelain manufactory the Meissner porcelain is produced, which has made the city famous. Also of economic importance is the production of electrical installations, chemical products and furniture. Under King Henry I, in 929, the Misni Castle was built, which from 1046 was the seat of the margraves and in 1068 the seat of the castellan of Meissen. Protected by the castle a settlement developed which got city rights at the end of the 12th century.
