Menton / France

Menton (Italian Mentone) is a town in the French department of Alpes-Maritimes on the Côte d'Azur with about 30,000 inhabitants.Protected by  the foothills of the Alps in the hinterland the city is characterized by a particularly mild climate.
Through its sheltered location Menton is also in winter the warmest place on the Côte d'Azur. The most pleasant travel months to visit are May and mid-September to mid-October.
Until 1157 the city belonged to the Counts of Ventimiglia. Then Menton was under the rule of the Genoese house of Vento until 1346 when together with Roquebrune it became the possession of the the Grimaldis of Monaco.
The Monegasque government was to last until 1848. In 1861 the inhabitants of Menton voted for its affiliation to France.

Worth seeing is the old town with its pastel-colored facades. They provide a strong Italian flavor. The city has many parks and gardens, especially in the suburb of Garavan partly with many rare tropical plants which particularly thrive in the favorable microclimate of Menton. Interesting as well is the baroque cathedral of Saint-Michel from 1675. Before the church is a mosaic with the the coat of arms of the Grimaldis, the Capuchin monastery L'Annonciade from the 18th century with view of Menton. The city has several museums, including the Museum of Prehistory and the Jean Cocteau Art Museum in the fort by the port.
