Mettlach is a municipality in the district of Merzig-Wadern (Saarland) with 10 districts and around 12,600 inhabitants. Almost half of the municipality area is covered by forest. Mettlach is located on the Saarschleife and extends west up to the Saargau. In the north, the municipality borders the Rhineland-Palatinate. In 676, the Franconian Duke Lutwinus, later Bishop of Trier, founded an abbey on the site of today's Mettlach. Around 990, Abbot Lioffin built a church of the Virgin Mary as the sepulcher of the founder. This church in the form of an octagon is today known as the Old Tower.
Today's abbeys date back to the 18th century and are the headquarters of the company Villeroy & Boch.
