Middelburg (about.40.000 inhabitants) Is the capital of the Dutch province of Zeeland and is located in the Walcheren region. The municipality also includes the towns of Arnemuiden, St. Laurens and Nieuw- and St. Joosland.
During World War II Middelburg suffered heavily from the bombardment of the Germans on May 17, 1940 and four years later by the Allies. The inner city was almost completely destroyed - the now incomplete, historically effective cityscape is based on a large-scale planned reconstruction in the post-war years.
