The historic Miltenberg lies on the left-hand side of the Main River, between Spessart and Odenwald, and has a population of around 10,000 inhabitants. Near the present-day Miltenberg, the Limes meets the Main, which from here further northwards the natural border of the Roman Empire to Germany. There are the remains of two Roman castles between Miltenberg and Bürgstadt (Miltenberg east Castle) as well as between Miltenberg and Kleinheubach (old town castle).
