The harbor town of Narvik in northern Norway is located on a peninsula between Rombaks- and Beisfjord. From the former small fishing village developed around the turn of the century the Ofotbahn, which established the important connection to the Swedish Kiruna, an important export port for northern Swedish iron ores. Unlike in other Nordic port cities, the mild climate in Narvik, which is influenced by the Gulf Stream, kept the harbor free of ice all year round.
Although the city was almost completely destroyed during World War II, today it is once again important for the local economy and has a population of almost 20,000 inhabitants. Especially in the summer, however, flocks of tourists expand, all of whom appreciate the breathtaking mountain scenery of the Fagernesfjell at the branching Ofotfjord.
Cruise offers to the port Narvik / Norway
In fact, not only the view of this panorama with the Narvik house is unique, but also the view from the top of the Fagernesfjell you should not miss to visit. On clear days you can see from there even to the Lofot Mountains. However, you do not have to worry about an arduous climb, since in the summer a cable car runs to the 656-m-high mountain peak until after midnight.
Narvik also offers its visitors various activities on dull days. The Ofoten Museum with exhibitions on fishing or the Nordland Røde Kors Krigsminnemuseet in the center of the city, where the war events in Narvik are documented, are opened daily. For those interested, there are even guided tours through the ore lading port.
But also smaller excursions to the surrounding area are worthwhile. A comfortable ride along the fjord to the Bjørnfjell, a plateau with several lakes, which invites you to go hiking or simply to take a deep breath, is certainly a special experience.
