Vicksburg, Mississippi / USA East Coast

Vicksburg is the main town of Warren County in the US state of Mississippi. The city has about 36,000 inhabitants and is located on a steep hill on the east side of the Mississippi. Vicksburg was founded in 1811 by Reverend Newitt Vick. Thanks to its strategic location high above the Mississippi, the town controlled the local river section. Therefore in 1863 the most important battle of the then western front rioted here in the during the Secession War, in which about 17,000 soldiers were killed.

Vicksburg has only a few houses from the pre-war period in the well-structured old town. One is the Cherry Court Road, which is visible from the outside and is surrounded by a 10-meter tall white column. Built in 1858, the former courthouse with clock tower and dome now houses a small town history museum.
The Vicksburg National Military Park was set up in 1899 along the shores and reconstructed artillery positions. A 26-km-long car tour leads through the 703 ha battlefields of 1863. The road passes monuments, statues, busts and memorials. In the west of the park stands the restored USS Cairo. The 53-meter-long, iron-clad gunship had been sunk in the river in 1862, and it was hardly a century later that it was recovered.
