Vis is a Croatian island in the Adriatic with around 3,500 inhabitants. The eponymous island town of Vis goes back to a Greek colony named Issa. Due to its strategically advantageous location, the island has always been of great importance for the military. For a long time it was therefore military exclusion zone and is again open to the public only since 1995. The plain in the middle of the island on the site of a former army airport is now used for viticulture.
