Zadar, located in the south of Croatia, on a narrow plate of the Adriatic Sea and also on the channel of Zadar, separated from the mainland by a moat, until 1873 fortress, has a large port, four gates (including the Marine Gate with an inserted piece of a Roman triumphal arch and the Porta di Terraferma designed by Sanmicheli and consists of four districts. The construction of Zadar is Venetian. Among the squares remarkable are the Piazza dei Signori with its beautiful main building and the Gradska Straza (with the city library) as well as the fountain square with an antique Corinthian column. One of these is also the Simeon Square.
Zadar was already a settlement in the Illyrian period. In Roman sources it is mentioned as Iader (Iadera), in the case of Konstantinos Porphyrogennetos in the tenth century as diadora.
In the 2nd century BC the Romans subjugated the city, built a capitol, fortifications, thermal baths and an aqueduct. After 59 BC Zadar was a Roman municipium, as of 48 BC a colony of Roman citizens.
