The lively little seaport in the north-east of Sardinia with approx. 40,000 residents, attracts attention with some voluminous watchtowers, which belong to the historic fortification wall. This encloses from the sea a complete intact old town on a headland. When entire Sardinia was conquered in the 14th century by the Aragonese, the residents of Algheros fought against this leadership and were expelled after a rebellion and replaced by catalans. Their descendants have been living here until today, they speak the catalan language and celebrate the religious ceremonies and rites.
