The Fiordland National Park, with over 12,500 km2 is the largest national park in New Zealand. It covers most of Fiordland and the southwestern tip of the South Island. The park was laid out in 1952 and is until today the most inaccessible part of the country. In 1990 it was declared a UNESCO world nature heritage. Tourist attractions are mainly its fjords. Fiordland is one of the most sparsely populated regions of New Zealand. One of the greatest towns is Te Anau with about 2,000 inhabitants.

The up to 2,700-meter-high mountains of the national park are covered up to the tree line by rainforest. The lakes of the national park are the deepest of New Zealand and the largest of the entire South Island. Many New Zealand bird species live here, for example, the takahē and the thick-billed penguins. In the fjords New Zealand fur seals have found an ideal habitat. Altogether 648 km of hiking trails invite you to unforgettable experiences of nature. In the Lord of the Rings movies different landscapes of the park can be seen: as the followers separated at the end of the first part, the team filmed around the Milford Sound, the backdrop of the so-called "Dead Marshes' from the second film can be found near Te Anau.
