Juneau is with around 31,000 inhabitants, the capital of the US state of Alaska, located by the Lynnfjord. Juneau is the only state capital of the United States that cannot be reached by road but only by plane or boat. For thousands of years Auke- and Taku people have lived in this region. After gold was discovered in the area, a gold mining camp was constructed here. The foundation of the city of Juneau took place in 1881, until 1940 it was a mining town. During WWI the mines closed. Eventually the town grew increasingly after the establishment of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline which transports oil from the Arctic to the Pacific coast.
