Ketchikan is a place where 150 years ago the Indians lived entirely undisturbed by the whites in their 12,000-year-old culture. They were well, they led a quiet, orderly life. Then came a Mr. Martin from Oregon and opened a fish factory, later a sawmill and everything changed. Around 1900 the Gold Rush settled in. Today tourism is the main source of income (up to 600,000 tourists annually visit the small village), then follow fish and timber industry.

Ketchikan has the largest collection of totem poles (arge, carved and painted wooden columns) .They are 100 to 150 years old, some them has greatly afflicted by the weather. More poles are still preserved in the air-conditioned rooms.
They are the only reliable evidence of a defunct culture. In an exhibition athere re also many photos to see, some older than 100 years. One can see settlements of Indians, next to their homes are perhaps 30 great Poles. Probably every year a totem pole was newly carved and built.
Directly on the Quai takes place three times a day this event for cruisers (about 40 people for $ 12). Four strong, young men take part in a chop and saw competition. It is spectacular when they balance tree trunks in the water. Two men balancing on the same tree trunk try to throw the other into the water by dancing and water splash. A show master heats up the atmosphere and who of the audience can throw the ax in a target from the audience, becomes very quickly a hero.
