The surroundings of Sarande is a special attraction. Here you can find both landscape and cultural treasures. To the former belongs the "blue eye", a small cold water lake that glimmers in beautiful colors. Also the beautiful coast landscape with the beaches attracts stressed visitors and promises relaxation, which is already announced during a walk along the marvelous promenade of Sarande. But the undisputed greatest attraction of the area are the ancient ruins of Butrint, a UNESCO world cultural heritage. It lies on a small peninsula on a beautiful lagoon. The settlement was founded in the 7th century BC, but most of the ruins date from the Roman period. At that time, Butrint became a popular and exclusive spa town of the Romans due to the mineral springs, which could also shine through a theater and provide amusement. You can still see the center with the Aesculap temple and theater, all around bathhouses, villas, fountains. Especially the Baptistery, a magnificent building with mosaics. The imposing church dates from Byzantine times. Each epoch has left its stone witnesses. Unfortunately, Butrint has not yet been fully excavated.
